The Premier Bank PLC has taken another significant step towards deepening financial inclusion across Bangladesh by signing a new agreement with the Credit Guarantee Department of Bangladesh Bank. The partnership is designed to widen access to credit for small, marginal, and underserved borrowers—particularly those who have historically found it difficult to obtain finance through conventional channels. The announcement was made through an official press release issued by the bank.
The agreement centres on bolstering financial support for eligible marginal and landless farmers, low-income professionals, school banking account holders, and micro-entrepreneurs. Notably, the scheme prioritises individuals who maintain Tk10, Tk50, or Tk100 “no-frills” accounts with Premier Bank, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to providing genuinely inclusive banking services for customers at the bottom of the economic pyramid.
The signing ceremony saw the formal exchange of documents between SM Wali Ul Morshed, Deputy Managing Director and Head of the Retail Banking Division at Premier Bank, and Muhammad Nazmul Haque, Director of the Credit Guarantee Department at Bangladesh Bank. Their collaboration marks an important milestone in aligning commercial banking initiatives with national financial-inclusion policies.
Also in attendance were Asif Khan, Executive Vice President and Head of Premier Bank’s SME and Agricultural Banking Division, along with other senior representatives from both organisations. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to nurturing small-scale entrepreneurship and supporting vulnerable communities who rely heavily on accessible financial assistance.
Through this arrangement, Premier Bank will leverage Bangladesh Bank’s credit guarantee mechanisms to extend lending facilities to customers who might not otherwise meet traditional collateral requirements. The initiative is intended not only to boost agricultural productivity and rural entrepreneurship but also to encourage long-term savings habits and responsible financial behaviour among low-income households.
Bank officials emphasised that the partnership reflects Premier Bank’s long-standing mission to bring formal financial services to the grassroots level—bridging the divide between mainstream banking and underserved populations. The programme is expected to accelerate the availability of small loans, promote sustainable livelihood opportunities, and contribute to broader national development goals.
