DUBAI — Global banking giant Citibank has announced the temporary closure of most of its branches and financial centres across the United Arab Emirates from 12 to 14 March 2026, citing precautionary measures in response to rising regional tensions and security concerns. The decision is part of a broader risk‑mitigation strategy adopted by multinational financial institutions operating in the Gulf.
Only the Mall of the Emirates branch in central Dubai will remain open during this period. All other outlets are expected to resume normal operations on 16 March 2026.
The closures follow an escalation of hostilities in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has sparked fears of potential attacks on economic and financial infrastructure. Iran’s military has issued warnings that it could target banking and economic interests associated with the U.S. and Israel — threats that have already prompted employee evacuations and remote working directives at several major international firms in the region.
In line with these precautions, Citibank has evacuated staff from its offices in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and the Oud Metha district, directing employees to work remotely to ensure both safety and continuity of operations.
Customer services have also been affected. Citibank’s UAE phone banking and cheque processing facilities are operating at reduced capacity, while clients are being strongly encouraged to utilise online and mobile banking platforms for routine transactions.
Other major banks in the region are taking similar measures. Standard Chartered has implemented work‑from‑home policies for its Gulf staff, while HSBC has temporarily shuttered its branches in Qatar, citing security concerns.
Analysts warn that these developments could undermine investor confidence in the Gulf as a stable financial hub, potentially affecting capital inflows, business continuity, and regional economic activity if the situation persists.
