Crude Bomb Explodes Outside Grameen Bank Headquarters in Mirpur

DHAKA — A crude bomb exploded in front of the Grameen Bank headquarters in Dhaka’s Mirpur district at dawn on Wednesday, marking yet another worrying incident targeting one of the country’s most internationally recognised financial institutions. Police have described the blast as a deliberate act of sabotage, although no injuries or property damage were reported.

According to initial reports from law enforcement, the explosion occurred at approximately 3:45 am on the road directly outside the main office of Grameen Bank. Officer-in-Charge Sajjad Roman of the Mirpur Model Police Station confirmed that the device detonated only moments after being hurled towards the premises.

“Two individuals on a motorcycle approached at speed and threw a crude bomb in front of the Grameen Bank building,” said OC Roman, adding that the attackers fled immediately afterwards. Despite the suddenness of the incident, the bank’s security personnel, who were stationed inside the compound at the time, remained unharmed.

Police Launch Full Investigation

Within minutes of the explosion, teams from the Mirpur Model Police Station arrived at the scene to examine the blast site and gather forensic evidence. The area has since been placed under tighter security, with investigators assessing CCTV footage from nearby streets and interviewing potential witnesses.

OC Roman emphasised that authorities are treating the situation with utmost seriousness: “This was clearly an act intended to create fear. Our investigation is underway, and we are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.”

Growing Concerns Over Targeted Intimidation

While no group has yet claimed responsibility, the attack comes amid rising concerns about politically motivated disruptions and isolated acts of violence across Dhaka. The deliberate nature of the attack — coupled with the method used — has raised questions about whether Grameen Bank, founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus, is being intentionally targeted.

The bank, known globally for pioneering microcredit and providing financial opportunities to low-income families, has long been viewed as a cornerstone of grassroots empowerment in Bangladesh. The incident has therefore sparked alarm among staff and beneficiaries who rely on its services.

Reassurances and Heightened Security

A spokesperson for Grameen Bank confirmed that operations at the headquarters remain unaffected and that additional security protocols may be adopted pending the outcome of the investigation. Employees scheduled to report for work later in the morning were notified about safety precautions but were told the premises were secure.

Local residents in the Mirpur area expressed concern about the early-morning blast, with several describing it as “unexpected” and “deeply unsettling”. Many called for stronger street surveillance and greater police presence, particularly in commercial districts that host major national institutions.

As the investigation progresses, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could help prevent further acts of sabotage.
