The deadline for submitting income tax returns is set to expire tomorrow, Tuesday, following several extensions granted earlier in the fiscal year. Taxpayers now have only two remaining days—Monday and Tuesday—to complete their submissions, with authorities urging prompt compliance to avoid penalties or administrative complications.
Under current regulations, all returns must be filed online via the system introduced by the National Board of Revenue. Taxpayers who have yet to gather necessary documentation are advised to do so immediately, as last-minute delays could hinder successful submission.
Rising Number of Registered Taxpayers
Bangladesh has witnessed a steady rise in the number of individuals holding Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs), now exceeding 12.5 million. Any individual with a taxable income is legally required to file a return. However, compliance levels remain mixed despite improvements in digital accessibility.
According to the latest figures released by the National Board of Revenue, more than 4.15 million taxpayers have already submitted their returns online. Additionally, over 5 million individuals have registered on the e-return platform, reflecting growing engagement with the digital system.
| Category | Number of Taxpayers |
|---|---|
| Total TIN holders | ~12.5 million |
| Registered for e-return system | 5 million+ |
| Returns submitted online | 4.15 million+ |
How to File Online
To submit a return, taxpayers must first register on the official e-return portal using a valid mobile phone number. For individuals residing abroad, a one-time password (OTP) is sent via email instead. After registration, users can log in with their credentials and complete the required forms.
The process involves declaring annual income and expenditure, calculating taxable income after exemptions, and incorporating any eligible tax rebates or reliefs—such as those related to investments. Taxpayers must also disclose assets if their total value exceeds BDT 5 million or if they own significant properties such as houses or vehicles.
One notable advantage of the online system is the ability to pay taxes directly from home. Payment options include bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket, and Nagad, making the process more accessible and efficient.
Option to Extend Deadline
Taxpayers who are unable to meet the deadline may apply for an extension through the same online portal. By logging into the e-return system and selecting the ‘time extension’ option, users can request additional time before 31 March.
Upon submission, the relevant tax commissioner will review the request and either approve or reject it digitally. If approved, taxpayers may receive up to 90 additional days to file their returns without incurring penalties or additional tax liabilities.
With the deadline imminent, officials are encouraging all eligible taxpayers to act promptly—either by submitting their returns or formally applying for an extension—to ensure compliance with national tax regulations.
