The Government has officially introduced a newly redesigned five-taka paper note, highlighting the country’s historical and archaeological architectural heritage. The circulation of the new series began on Tuesday, with initial issuance taking place through the Motijheel office of Bangladesh Bank. Authorities have confirmed that distribution will be expanded gradually to other regional branches across the country.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the redesigned note forms part of a broader initiative to modernise Bangladesh’s currency system while strengthening security features and improving public confidence in cash transactions. The new series has been issued under the signature of Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Majumder.
Officials have emphasised that although the new notes are entering circulation, all previously issued paper notes and coins will remain fully legal tender and continue to be accepted without restriction in everyday transactions.
The design of the note has been carefully developed to reflect national identity and cultural heritage. The front side features the historic Star Mosque in Dhaka, a renowned example of Mughal-era architecture and decorative artistry. This is complemented by a floral motif of the national flower, the water lily, symbolising purity and national pride. The reverse side incorporates a graffiti-style illustration inspired by 2024 artwork, reflecting contemporary social expression and modern artistic trends.
Enhanced security measures have been integrated into the note to reduce counterfeiting risks. These include a watermark featuring the face of the Royal Bengal Tiger, beneath which an electrotype numeral “5” and a government emblem are embedded. A security thread measuring two millimetres in width has been inserted on the left side, designed to be clearly visible under light. Additionally, microprinted text repeatedly displaying the word “Bangladesh” has been added to the lower front portion of the note to further strengthen anti-forgery protection.
Officials from the Ministry of Finance stated that these upgraded security technologies are expected to significantly reinforce the integrity of the country’s cash-based financial system. They also noted that incorporating cultural, historical, and architectural elements into the design helps reinforce national identity and promotes awareness of Bangladesh’s heritage among the public.
