Remittance Hits Tk 12,630 Crore

In the first nine days of May this year, Bangladesh received 102.90 million US dollars in remittance, according to data from Bangladesh Bank. At the official exchange rate of 122.75 taka per US dollar, the inflow is equivalent to 12,630 crore 97 lakh 50 thousand taka.

The information was confirmed on Sunday (10 May) afternoon by Arif Hossain Khan, spokesperson for Bangladesh Bank. He stated that the inflow of remittance has shown a consistent upward trend during the period under review.

He further noted that in just three days—from Thursday to Saturday—the country received remittances worth 3,400 crore 17 lakh 50 thousand taka. This short-term inflow forms a significant portion of the total remittance received during the first nine days of May.

When compared with the same period of the previous year, a notable increase is evident. During the first nine days of May last year, Bangladesh received 86.40 million US dollars in remittance. This means that the current year’s figure reflects a rise of 19.10 per cent year-on-year.

A broader assessment of the current financial year (1 July to 9 May) also indicates sustained growth. During this period, the total remittance inflow stood at 3,036.20 million US dollars. In the corresponding period of the previous financial year, the figure was 2,540.10 million US dollars. This represents an increase of 19.50 per cent year-on-year.

According to Bangladesh Bank, the sustained increase in remittance inflows reflects a strengthening trend in overseas earnings. The central bank data also indicates that such inflows play an important role in supporting foreign exchange reserves and maintaining overall stability in the external sector of the economy.
