Offices and Banks Reopen Following Eid Break

After a week-long closure in observance of Eid-ul-Fitr, government offices, banks, and insurance institutions across Bangladesh will resume operations today, signalling the return to full-scale administrative and economic activity nationwide.

Office hours will run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, as per usual practice. Following the extended holiday, a significant number of government employees, corporate staff, and other working professionals have begun returning to Dhaka from their hometowns, prompting a notable increase in commuter traffic across the capital.

Major transport hubs have felt the pressure of returning passengers. Bus terminals, railway stations, and river ports have all seen heightened activity as travellers hurry back ahead of the reopening. Authorities have advised commuters to allow extra time for journeys and to follow safety protocols amid the surge.

Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most significant religious festivals for the Muslim community, was celebrated nationwide on 21 March with customary prayers, family gatherings, and festive celebrations. The government had declared a seven-day public holiday from 17 March to 23 March to accommodate the festival, allowing citizens to travel, celebrate, and spend time with family.

In parallel, the newspaper industry observed a five-day hiatus, as declared by the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB). The break, from 19 March to 23 March, concluded today, marking a return to the regular publication schedule for both print and digital editions.

As the festive period concludes, Bangladesh is gradually reverting to its routine pace of administrative, financial, and commercial operations. Analysts predict a smooth resumption of activities, although initial days may see heavy commuter traffic and temporary delays in public service delivery due to the concentrated return of employees to urban centres.

Officials have urged businesses and institutions to maintain adherence to working hours and operational guidelines to ensure efficiency and minimise disruption as the nation transitions from holiday mode back to regular productivity.

With the reopening of offices, banks, and media outlets, daily life across the country is expected to normalise over the coming week, signalling a renewed rhythm in governance, trade, and economic engagement.
