Janata Bank Ltd. In Bengali: জনতা ব্যাংক লিমিটেড is a state-owned commercial bank in Bangladesh established in 1972. Its headquarters is situated at Motijheel in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. It is the second-largest commercial bank in Bangladesh.
History of Janata Bank
Following the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, Janata-Bank Limited was formed combining the then United Bank Limited and Union Bank Limited under the Bank Nationalization Ordinance of 1972 (President’s Order 26).
The management of Janata-Bank has been transferred to Janata-Bank Limited after transforming the bank into a company following the existing company act under the Enterprise Growth and Bank Modernization Project’ (EGBMP) which has been taken in 2004–05 in order to reform the nationalized commercial banks. Janata-Bank Limited started its operation on 15 November 2007.
